Astrid Salomon is a visual artist based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia.
Her practice investigates the relationship between emotional memory and the physical body, both marked and resilient. Her hand-built sculptures manifest this inquiry through an asymmetrical balance, a formal strategy of unequal parts finding equilibrium, embodying emotional weight without seeking resolution.
The work holds internal contradiction: raw materiality alongside refinement, a sharp line and organic curve, physical mass rendered seemingly effortless. Each piece is constructed from custom clay blends, layered with oxide washes and proprietary glazes developed through ongoing material research. Multiple firings allow for gradual surface accumulation across individual forms.
Since establishing her studio in 2020, Salomon has developed her own glazes and fires all work in her kiln. The practice embraces imperfection and individuality. Each piece emerging from persistent feeling shaped by experimentation. The result is work that carries quiet but dynamic energy, inviting proximity and sustained attention.
Recipient of the 2023 Silicious Award for Ceramic Excellence in Queensland, Australia, Salomon continues to expand her practice with a focus on innovation and materiality. Her work reflects an intimate relationship with the medium, encouraging contemplation of the delicate balance between tension and harmony.
